Managing your money

Quick links

We've provided a short list to get you started with information on setting up a bank account, finding an ATM machine and overseas money transfers.

Western does not endorse any of these companies or recommend these over anything else you find.

Setting up a bank account

To make things easier, you’re going to need a bank account. Select from one of Australia's largest banks:

Finding an ATM machine

Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) allow you to use your bank account to withdraw money and can be commonly found in populated areas near shops, petrol stations and on some campuses.

Your preferred bank might even have their own ATM locator tools, otherwise Google Maps can be helpful too.

Overseas money transfer

We recommend coming into the country and converting enough Australian dollars to get you by for a few weeks while you set up. Whatever way you’re looking to transfer money to or from home, there are a few ways to do this.

Methods to transfer

  • Services like Convera allow you to transfer money without having a local account set up
  • Online / Electronic transfer to your Australian Bank account

Note: There are usually fees associated with converting currencies and transferring money from overseas.
